Lewis Mabee was a United Empire Loyalist. UEL Status:Undetermined Date: Undated
Lewis (Mabie) Mabee UEL lived in Canada.
Ludovicus Mabie is the son of Jacob Meby and Catharina Vroman. He was born about 1739 in the Mohawk Valley region of Schenectady, New York Colony. At some point in his life, he started to call himself "Lewis".
At about age 28, Lewis Mabie[1] married Nancy Powell[2] on 20 Dec 1767 at the Schenectady Reformed Dutch Church, NY colony.[3] Lewis Clement (uncle of Nancy) gifted the new couple 50 acres of land.[4]
During the Revolutionary War, Mabie volunteered for military duty and was promoted to Sergeant in Butler's Rangers.[5] While he was away from home fighting for the Tories, his wife was told to leave the family's 50-acre estate[6] in the Mohawk Valley by the American Revolutionary soldiers. She fled north with their children.[7]
Mrs. Mabie requested to be compensated for damages by the American Army's actions against her and her family regardless of the property seizure. Later, the NY state Commissioners considered the estate forfeited because of Lewis's UEL position and activities and so out of retribution for his anti -American efforts, his estate was sold.[8]
The family now relocated on the Canadian side of Niagra waited to be issued land to re-settle upon as loyalists. In order to distribute rations, the "1783 Niagara return of persons under the description of Loyalists" document accounts for the number, ages, and sexes of each family member in Lt. Col. Butler's Company in the Corps of Rangers at Niagara on 30 November 1783. On that day, these were the members of the Lewis Mabee family:
He and his wife and 5 children were issued land in H District upon P.L.N. 1786
[11][12]
On 18 Dec 1806, in Bertie (later Willoughby) Township, Welland County, Upper Canada, Lewis was granted 500 acres of land for his UEL participation during the Revolutionary War. Lewis' grant included Lot 16, Con 8, and Lot 16, Con 9; from the Niagara River.[13]
Lewis died on 12 Oct 1823 in Upper Canada. He was buried at McAffee Cemetery, Fort Erie, Bertie Township, Lincoln County, Upper Canada.[14][15]
