Biography
Alexander and John MacDonald, sons of John, were merhcnats at Mabou Coal Mines and Mabou Harbour; they were not married.[1] Both are listed as Farmers in 1871, but often Farmers did mercantile business on the side during these days.
Alexander MacDonald (47) can be found on the 1871 census with brothers Angus (28) and Allan (32), with them are their parents John (74), and Mary (70) along with sisters Ann (30) and Alexer (26.. this is Alexina). There is also an Elizabeth (13) who is too young to be a sister.. she may be an illegitimate daughter of one of the brothers? [2]
