Biography

Farquhar (pronounced farrer) Macdonald with his wife Mary and their seven children sailed from Caithness, Scotland to America in 1803. They planned to settle in Virginia, but the ship was driven into Halifax, Nova Scotia by bad weather. The mother refused to go any farther. Farquhar Macdonald was born February 1746 (family record) or 1744 (tombstone), married in June 1785 Mary Macdonald (or perhaps Church). His wife was born 1764 (family record) or 1756 (tombstone). Buried with her husband, in the Old Cemetery in Gay's River, Nova Scotia, their stone bearing the words "Natives of North Britain". The birth dates come from the Parish Register in Scotland, and the death dates from the family papers of Miss May MacDonald of Milford. They settled on the Halifax side of the Shubenacadie (shoo-ben-ACK-a-dee) River evidently for a few months on or near the McHeffey Ridge (Milford), then on land near John Densmore and family, and finally settled permanently at Carroll's Corner. Farquhar MacDonald must have lived at or near Halkirk, Caithness, as the names of all his children appear in the Parish Register there. Much of this information from Allan Fulton Macdonald, RR2, Shubenacadie, Hants. Co. Nova Scotia B0N 2H0, Canada, in 1983-5. Record linkage to information given by Blanche Macdonald Bruce is provided by her listing Ephraim Alexander Macdonald's siblings with almost perfect concordance, and by her knowing that her grandfather's name was Cameron, which seems to have been an unusual name for Scottish Macdonalds in the late 18th century, and that her grandmother's name was Susan.
