Biography

Catherine Ann "Kate Ann" MacDonald, daughter of Malcolm MacDonald and Kirsty MacDonald, was born at 9 a.m. on June 3, 1882 in Cnoc a' Lin (Knockline), North Uist, Scotland.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8] Her father was a crofter and they lived at Croft #9 Cnoc a' Lin.[2][7]

Kate Ann was the 11th of 12 children in her family:

As of the 1901 Census, Kate Ann was 18 and living with her father and some of her siblings in a house with 3 rooms with windows in Cnoc a' Lin.[2] Her father only spoke Gaelic, while she and her siblings could speak both Gaelic and English.[2]

Kate Ann married Ewen MacDonald, son of Allan MacDonald and Marion MacDonald, on August 22, 1901 at Paible United Free Church in North Uist.[3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12] Ewen was 37 years old and a joiner and crofter at Croft #1a Cnoc a' Lin.[3] Kate Ann was 19 years old.[3] Their marriage was witnessed by Angus A. MacDonald and Marion McDonald and was solemnized by John MacLeod, United Free Church Minister.[3]

Kate Ann and Ewen had several children:

In 1910, Kate Ann and other family members became ill with Tuberculosis.[5][14] Her 8 month old daughter, Mary Ann, died at home after suffering from Tuberculosis Meningitis for 14 days.[14] In 1911, Kate Ann and Ewen named their next daughter Mary Ann as well, however she died at just 5 months old of Tuberculosis.[15]

Just 1 month and 1 day following the death of her infant daughter, Kate Ann succumbed to pulmonary tuberculosis.[5] She died at the age of 29 at 3 a.m. on November 12, 1911 at her home in Hastin, Cnoc a' Lin, North Uist.[5] Her death record noted that she had suffered from tuberculosis for one year.[5]
