Biography

Sarah Frances (Sally) MacDonald, daughter of Donald MacDonald and Sophia Hardy, was born 15 September 1854 in Gabarus, Cape Breton. She was raised in Gabarus and is listed there in her parents home in the 1871 Canada Census.[1][2]

Sarah married John Hayman, 12 October 1877 in Halifax, Nova Scotia.[3](See Research Notes) In 1882, Sarah and John immigrated to Cambridge, Middlesex, Massachusetts with their 3 children. In Cambridge, 7 more children were born and they are listed there with 10 children in the 1900 US Federal Census,[4] with 6 children in 1910, [5] and with their sone Charles in 1920.[6]

At the time of the 1930 US Census, Sarah and John had relocated to Solano, California.[7] Sometime after John's death in Vallejo, Solano, 14 February 1933,[8] Sarah relocated to Hartford, Connecticut, where she died, 20 February 1939.[9] [10] She is buried in Hamilton Avenue Cemetery, Norwich, New London, Connecticut, United States.[11]

Research Notes

The marriage record for Sarah MacDonald and John Hayman helps to ensure we have the correct person to match 'Saley' in the 1871 Census. Her age is correct for a birth year of 1854 - some ancestry trees have her birth as 1855, but 1854 matches her headstone. Her parents are listed and Dan'l and Sophia and her father's occupation is a tailor, which all matches what we know fo Donald and Sophia MacDonald.
