Hugh was the progenitor of the Glenmore and Mugstot (Monkstadt) family. In 1691 his father, James Macdonald granted him a feu charter for the lands of Glenmore, Glenteltine, Skirinish, as well as other places.
In 1671 Hugh married Anne, daughter of Alexander Robertson of Struan, 16th of Struan, 12th Chief of Clan Robertson. Her grandfather is another Alexander.
In 1682 Hugh married Katherine, daughter of Colonel Allan Macdonald of Kytrie.
In 1691, Hugh is entered in the Valuation Roll of the County of Inverness as a freeholder of considerable standing.
