Biography

Hugh was born about 1804. He was the son of Ronald McDonald and Catherine Johnston. He passed away in 1879.

His father died in 1826. [1] In 1835, Catherine McDonald of Jupiter River settlement, Lot 8 entered into an agreement with her sons Hugh McDonald and Augustine McDonald, of the same place, that they would maintain her in a comfortable and decent manner, in exchange for land. The property in question was in Lot 8, 200 acres, sold to Catherine McDonald and Alexander McDonald her son by Hugh McDonald, Esq of Three Rivers. The Jupiter River was also called Trout River. [2][3]

Angus Ramsay and George McDonald were witnesses at the marriage of Flora Ramsay and Hugh McDonald in Richmond Parish, PEI. William McGregor was the Presbyterian minister.

Hugh McDonald in Lot 8 was a farmer in 1861, with a household of 7, all Presbyterians, all born on the Island. There was a married couple, probably the man and woman aged 45-60.[4]

A farmer in Lot 8 in an 1871 directory. One of the first elders of the Presbyterian Church in Lot 7.

Flora died in 1872 at age 64, and Hugh died April 1879 at age 75. [5]

Hugh McDonald wrote his will in early 1879, leaving his farm to his son Michael, and some livestock to an unmarried daughter, Annabella. The witnesses were Donald Ramsay, labourer, Lot 14, who had died, and Samuel McDonald, farmer, who had gone to the States, by the time the will was filed for probate by Michael, in 1895.[6]

Children of Hugh and Flora were Ronald, Michael, Nancy, Annabel, and Catherine.

Research Notes

Undocumented family tree says his parents were Roland and Margaret, who emigrated to Prince Edward Island in 1797. Their four sons were John, Murdock and Alex, and Hugh. John settled at West Point; Murdock and Alex in Glenwood; Hugh inherited the homestead. Daughter Margaret McDonald married Michael Mattox.
