I can't find a birth record match for him in California. It's possible that he was born in Maine, the state where his mother was born, and that his family moved to California when he was very young, making it the only place he remembered living. On the negative side, his name is not spelled MacDonald in this record, but that is not a deal breaker for considering this record as a possible match. Looking for marriage record to that might name his parents.

If that last record is considered possible, then this next record makes more sense. But this record does not match where he says his parents were born, Scotland and Maine, and it says he was born in California, not Maine.
