Biography

Bruce was born about 1863. [1] He was the son of Peter MacDougall and Harriet ?. [1]

He moved to Moncton with his family at the age of 12. He studied law before entering the field of journalism. [2]

Bruce was an active Socialist and editor of Free Speech, a weekly paper promoting Socialism. In 1909, after writing attacks on St. John's mayor and other public officials, he was convicted of libel and his paper was shut down. [3] He fell down a flight of stairs in 1910 and died. Despite the coroner's ruling on the incident, It has been postulated by some that this fiery character's death was no accident. [1] Bruce himself may have died too young, but his spirit has carried on in more than a few MacDougalls.
