Biography

Catherine was born in 1832. She was the daughter of Alexander MacDougall and Ann McLean. [1] It is assumed that she died before 1901.

Catherine was probably the young woman in the 1861 census with her parents.

In 1863, Duncan's widowed mother and brothers and sisters living on the Island signed an agreement where Duncan would provide support for their mother, unmarried sister Catherine, and Alexander McDougall Jr, in return for them not making a claim on the land owned by their father, 100 acres in Lot 12. In addition to Duncan, those named were married daughters Nancy Dyment and Elizabeth Dyment, daughter Catherine, and sons Peter, Charles, James, Alexander Jr., and Hector. Alexander was described as being under 21, and living with their mother. This Alexander is probably Elizabeth's son, born before her marriage to Charles Dyment. [2]

Research Notes

There were a number of Catherine McDougalls in the PEI Marriage Registers who can be eliminated on the basis of location, religion, or date.

If her mother had been born around 1783, then Catherine would probably have been their youngest child.

A possibility is that Catherine never married, but had a daughter Eliza, the Eliza McDougall who married Daniel Hutchinson. Eliza's death record did not have the name of her father. Catherine was not with Daniel and Eliza in 1881.

A Catherine McDougall age 56 is in the 1891 census with Daniel and Eliza. Her father was born PEI, and her mother in Scotland. The Hutchinson household was next to the family of Duncan McDougall.[3]

This Catherine was not in the 1901 census with Daniel and Eliza.

Another possibility is that Catherine, mother of Eliza, was the widow of Archibald McDougall, Alexander's son who predeceased him.
