Alexander MacEachen, "Alasdair Gobha," came to America in the year 1791 (assuming he was about 20 at this point, may have been younger) with a brother John, "Iain Gobha," and a sister, Mary. It seems Alexander was the "Priests' man" in the old country, that is he assisted a Priest in moving about the countryside to serve extremely spread out settlements. In early 1800s Western Cape Breton this would have been extremely tough as there were no roads, and much of this travel would have been by bushwhacking or rowboat. He served Father Alexander "Mor" MacDonald, "Clianaig" who was the first Priest of Arisaig in Antigonish County.
For his duties Alexander was eventually granted 300 acres on the South side of Mabou Harbour where he settled. He married Mary Campbell, daughter of Samuel and they had a family of eight; John, Angus, Allan, Samuel, Alexander, Mary, Catherine and Anne.
