He was an alumnus of Trinity College School.[1] He graduated the Royal Military College of Canada in 1891, when he a commissioned a second lieutenant in the Royal Engineers shortly afterwards.
He served in the Ashanti expedition of 1895–96 (Fourth Anglo-Ashanti War). He had a distinguished record in both the Boer War and the Great War, being awarded the Distinguished Service Order and Legion of Honor, appointed Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George and the Russian Order of St Stanilaus.[1]
