Biography
Christy MacKay was born in Scotland.
Christy (Christine or Christian) was born about 1799 (according to the 1871 Canada Census for Nova Scotia which listed her age as 72[1]), probably at Talladale, Gairloch, Ross-shire, Scotland. She was the second to last daughter of John MacKay and Miss MacRae.
Christy MacKay migrated from Scotland to Nova Scotia.
She emigrated in June 1805 from Stornoway, Lewis and Harris on the Sir Sydney Smith to Nova Scotia[2] at the same time as her parents, brothers and sisters except for one.
She never married and had no known children.
In 1871 she was living with her two sisters, Catharine (88) and Annabella (72) , next to her sister's son, Alexander Fraser at New Glasgow, Pictou, Nova Scotia[1][3]. She was aged 70, born in Scotland, and was of the Church of Scotland religion.
She lived her last years with her brother "Squire" John’s widow Lillias (87), being with her and her daughters Margaret (60) and Christy Sarle (67) at New Glasgow, Pictou in 1891[4][5]. She was then aged 93.
She died after 1891 but before 1901 as she was not found in that Census.
Research Notes
No record has been found for her in the 1881 Census. This is probably not her aged 84 in 1881 living at Rogers Hill, Pictou with Maria McKay a weaver[6].
Civil registration of deaths in Nova Scotia occurred between 1864 and 1877, then restarted in 1908, so there is no registration for her death.
