Biography

George Steuart MacKenzie 7th Baronet FRS FRSE FSA was born on 22nd June 1780 at Bengal, India. He was the only son of Major General Sir Alexander Mackenzie of Coul, a General in the Bengal Army, and his wife, Katharine Ramsay, daughter of Robert Ramsay of Camno. He was tutored privately then spent one year at Edinburgh's High School (1795-6), before studying sciences at the University of Edinburgh.[1] In 1796 he succeeded to the baronetcy on the death of his father, aged 16 years.[1]

MacKenzie first became known to the scientific world in 1800, when he claimed a proof of the identity of diamond with carbon by a series of experiments on the formation of steel by the combination of diamonds with iron; in these experiments he is said to have made free use of his mother's jewels. In 1799 he was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. He served as Vice-President of the Society 1844 to 1848. In 1815, he was also elected Fellow of the Royal Society of London. He was also President of the Caledonian Horticultural Society.[1]

MacKenzie married, first, on 8th June 1802, Mary Macleod, fifth daughter of Donald Macleod of Geanies, sheriff of Ross-shire, with whom he had seven sons and three daughters. Their fourth son Robert Ramsay MacKenzie became the third Premier of Queensland before returning to Scotland as the 10th Baronet. Following Mary's death in 1835, George married again the following year, to Catherine Street nee Jardine, second daughter of Sir Henry Jardine of Harwood, and widow of Captain John Street of the Royal Artillery, with whom he had one son.[1]

He passed away on 26th October 1848 at his home, Kinellan House, in western Edinburgh, Scotland.[1]
