Ensign 94th Foot 16 Apr 1794. Lt29 Apr 1795. Capt 22 Dec 1804. Major 87th Foot 4 Oct 1810. Lt Colonel 7th west India Regt 25 Jan 1813. Bt Colonel 22 Jul 1830. Major General 23 Nov 1841. Lt General 1 1 Nov 1851. General 5 Jun 1855. Served in the Peninsula Feb — Nov 1810, Dec 1810 — Jul 1811 and Jan — Sep 1812. Present at Cadiz (Mentioned in Despatches), Barrosa (severely wounded and awarded pension of {200) and Seville (Mentioned in Despatches). At Cadiz, during the defence of Fort Matagorda, Maclaine and his small force were heavily outnumbered by the French. He held the Fort from 22 Feb until 22 Apr 1810 until ordered to evacuate by Lt General Thomas Graham. MGS medal for Barrosa. Knight of Charles Ill of Spain. Also served in India 1799 (present at Malavelly, Seringapatam where he was so severely wounded that he was in hospital for a year), the Polygar War 1801 (wounded), Mahratta Wars 1802—1804 (present at Julnaghur, Gawilghur, Asseerghur where he was wounded and Argaum). Ordered home 1804 because of numerous wounds sustained between 1789 and 1804. KCB 1852. Colonel 52nd Foot 8 Feb 1847. Brother of Capt Hector Maclaine 57th Foot, Major John Maclaine 7.3"' Foot killed at Waterloo and Capt Murdoch Maciaine 20*' Foot killed at Maida 1806.
