Biography

He is first noticed in Ferguson's work[1] in the Marriage Register of the Scots Brigade when he appears in a contract of marriage, 9 October 1741 at Menen, now in West Flanders, Belgium, but then part of the United Netherlands, between himself, stated to be a Sergeant of Captain Ross' Company, and Clara Clark, stated to be widow of Sergeant John MacDonald. The witnesses to the Contract were Sergeant Donald Mackay and John Alexander. They were married on 7 November 1741 (although it is noted in the source as "7 ditto" this would have placed it before the contract and there was, generally, a month between contract and marriage).
