Biography

According to the Census of Small Isles 1764-1765 there is a Charles Maclean, born in 1737 and living at Guirdil. His parents, John MacLean and Rachel Campbell, must have been very young when Charles was born based on the ages given in the 1764-6 census. If these are Charles's parents then there may be a discrepancy in their ages which is certainly possible. [1]

Maclean- Sinclair, in The Clan Gillian, states: " John, Iain Mac Thearlaich, held the farm at Kinloch Srcisort in Rum. He married Rachel Campbell, daughter of Hector Campbell in Rum, and had by her four children; Allan, Charles, Margaret and Flora. Allan succeeded his father in Kinloch Scrisort. Charles became tenant at Guirdal. He married a sister of Allan of Guirdal and had be her three sons, Allan, Hector and Alexander, all of whom emigrated to Cape Breton in 1826.

The John McLean and Rachel Campbell referred to above were at Harris in the Census of the Small Isles, aged 40 and 39 respectively. Living with them were a son Allan 24, a daughter Florry 19, and a daughter Margaret 12. This family mirrors that in MacLean-Sinclair's The Clan Gillian; and thus, is most likely that family. Though in the Census they appear at Harris; rather than, Kinloch. The Charles above, in the Census of the Small Isles was listed at Guirdal age 27 with his wife Florry 29, and a son John 2.

However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Charles:
