Biography

Calum MacLeod is a member of Clan MacLeod.
Scottish flag
Calum MacLeod was born in Scotland.

He is a Grandparent of Donald Trump

Malcolm MACLEOD was born 27 Dec 1866 in Stornoway, Ross and Cromarty, Scotland to two Macleod parents, Alexander and Anne. He was a fisherman and crofter, and also served as the "compulsory officer," in charge of enforcing attendance at the local school from 1919. He died of "cerebral thrombosis" on 22 Jun 1954 in Tong.[1]

Malcom was a crofter and fisherman.[2]

Updated on 19th May 2020 using information from the book "Tong: The Story of a Lewis Village" produced by Tong Historical Society in 1984, which has this to say about Malcolm (Calum) on page 37, referring to the croft at No. 5 Tong:

"No. 5 ....Another croft was added in the late 1860's. Malcolm Macleod (Mac Alasdair Mhic Uilleam, 25 Aird Tong) bought this croft from Malcolm Smith when he moved to Steinish in 1895. Later the tenancy passed to his son-in-law Malcolm Murray."

Please note that the genealogy given here in Gaelic means "the son of Alasdair (or Alexander), the son of William." Given that, I have updated the address of Malcolm's birth. This also corrects the identity of Malcolm's mother's father's parents, so I will update that listing too.

One last note - anyone working with records from the Gaelic-speaking Western Isles of Scotland should be aware that a number of people living at the same time would have had the same name. This is because surnames were taken from the Clans, and babies were usually named after relatives. This makes identifying, for example, exactly which "Donald Macleod" was the father of which "Kirsty Macleod" quite complicated. Thankfully, in the past few years accurate history books have been produced listing the records of the various crofts, along with the family history of the residents. This has made tracing family trees much easier. (Colin Macleod, Macleod-2008)
