Norman was known throughout the Highlands and Islands as Tormod Mor (Big Norman). In 1806 he was joint factor with Roderick MacLeod, 1st of the Uilinish family, on the MacLeod Estates, and thereafter MacLeod of MacLeod appointed him to police Glenelg, which was in those days frequently raided by Lochaber cattle-lifters. He removed from Drynoch to the tack of Ellanriach, where he built a good house for his family. The house at Drynoch was allowed to fall into decay.
Big Norman married, as his first wife, a lady of the name of Ross, and by her had issue.
His second wife was a Miss M. MacKenzie of Scatwell, with issue.
