Lauchlan succeeded his father Angus "MacDhonil Oig" MacLeod as minister of St. Kilda, South Uist in 1788. He relinquished his charge in 1830 and settled at Bernera where he died in 1832.

He married Marion MacLean, daughter of Neil MacLean and Miss Bethune. They had issue:

1. Angus - born 1797, was an officer in the British Royal Navy. He died in 1837 without issue.
2. Donald - born 1798, died 1813.
3. Norman (1800-1877)
