Biography

Murdo MacLeod was born in 1865 on Isle of Lewis, Ross-shire, Scotland, United Kingdom. He was the son of Alexander MacLeod and Isabella Stewart.

He married Annie MacIver in 1886 in Stornoway, Isle of Skye, Scotland. [1]

On 18th April 1884 the young couple embarked aboard Crown of Arragon at Glasgow and migrated to the Colony of Queensland (Australia), arriving Brisbane 1st July 1884. [2] In their new homeland they had two sons and five daughters:

  1. Annie Isabella (1889-1966), married Thomas Chapman.
  2. Jessie (1891-1968), married Jack Hogg, who died in 1929.
  3. Emily Jane (1892-92), infant mortality.
  4. Alexander Murdo (1893-1963), married Elizabeth Maudsley.
  5. George Leighton (1896-1978), married Lavinia Jory; was awarded the Military Medal in WWI.
  6. Emily Jane (1899-1970), married Dennis Connellan.
  7. Christina Elizabeth (1901-80), married James Green.
Murdo was a gardener

They lived in Brisbane until 1895, then moved to the beautiful rural village of Pinbarren Siding (re-named Pomona in1900 (after the Roman goddess of fruit and orchards), between the Sunshine Coast and Gympie, and settled.

Murdo passed away on 23rd December 1930 in Pomona. [3]

Historical setting

Raised his family during the depression of the 1890s, witnessed the federation of the six British Colonies into the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901 and saw the effects of the dreadful carnage of The Great War 1914-18. Murdo passed away as another depression was beginning to bite. Was a subject of three monarchs, Queen Victoria and Kings Edward VII and George V. The South Pole was reached, and gold was discovered at Gympie, just 40 kms to the north of Pomona.
