Biography

Edmund was born in 1698. He is the second son of Rev. Angus MacQueen of Sleat. He received his MA degree from Kings College, Aberdeen on 2 April 1719. Rev. Edmund was admitted as minister of the newly constituted parish of Sleat (Presbytery of Skye), in 1726, succceding his father, who was the first MacQueen minister of Sleat. Rev. Edmund continued this charge until 1741 and died before 1742. He was entitied to a manse and a glebe, but in 1733, in lieu of these, he held the nine pennylands of Aird, which was the largest single farm of all the MacDonald tenants. In 1734, he renounced his right to a manse and glebe, as Sir Alexander MacDonald had "settled him in a convenient residence and possession."

Rev. Edmund married Florence, the daughter of James MacDonald, tacksman of Aird. Sleat. who was a brother of Sir Donald MacDonald, third baronet of Sleat.

Although the Fasti records that Rev. Edmund MacQueen died without issue, there is in the Book of deeds in Edinburgh an assignation by Alexander MacQueen to John MacLeod of Raasay that John MacLeod had paid a debt owing to Rev. Edmund MacQueen, Alexander MacQueen’s father. The loan by Edmund to Archibald, whIch is the subject of this assignment was made In August 1738. [1]
