Fiachrae was born about 0340. He is the son of Eochaid Mugmedón and Mong Finn Fiodhaig. He was a King of Connaught, reigning from c. 358.
He was ancestor of the Uí Fiachrach dynasties of Connacht.
He went to war against his brother Brión Macechach, fighting a battle at Damchluain (near Tuam, Co. Galway), in which Fiachrae was captured and taken to Tara. Fiachrae's son Nath Í rallied his forces, defeating Brion in battle at Damchluain.
Fiachrae and his brother Aillil fought Eochaid mac Crimthainn in Ulster, taking hostages and loot. Fiachrae was wounded in that battle, dying shortly afterward.
