Mary Clements Kay Macdonald was born in Invercargill, Southland, on 27 August 1895 to Mary Jessie Woodhouse (Grigor) Macdonald and Herbert Alexander Macdonald. She was always known as Kay.[1]
Kay married Gerard Henry Nicholls on 28 December 1932. Gerald was a widower with three children from his first marriage. Kay and Gerald had one child together. Kay became a hospital matron, but suffered from Alzheimer's in late life.[2]
Kay was widowed at age 79 on the death of her husband Gerard on 11 March 1975. She passed away just four months later on 13 July 1975 in Te Aroha at age 79.
