Mary was born on February 8, 1869 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. She was the daughter of John Alexander Macdonald and Susan Agnes (Bernard MacDonald. Mary was born when her father was serving his first term as Prime Minister of Canada and was the only child born to a sitting Canadian Prime Minister until Justin Trudeau was born to Prime MInister PIerre Trudeau more than 100 years later. Her mother, an accomplished writer in her own right, published many travel diaries and political sketches.[1]
Mary was born with Hydrocephalus caused by a congenital defect, a condition which causes fluid to build up in the ventricles of the brain and which can cause severe disability without treatment. Treatments to manage Hydrocephalus had not been developed in Mary's lifetime. She therefore used a wheelchair, had limited use of her hands and speech was difficult.
Her father bought her a typewriter when she was young and she learned to communicate with him in letters.
Her father passed away in 1891 when she was only 22. After this, she and her mother moved several times before emigrating to England in 1893. They resided in Sydenham in South-East London where she enjoyed outings in Hyde Park, the museum, the aquarium, the Crystal Palace and the theatre. Mary and her mother spent the winters in Alassio, Italy.
Mary's mother died when she was 51, after which she resided with her companion Sarah Coward.
Mary passed away on January 28, 1933 in Sussex, England at the age of 63.[1][2] She was interred at the Hove Cemetery in Hove, Brighton.
