Donald (Macdonald) Macdonald Lord of the Isles is Notable.

Donald is the son of John (de Yle) Macdonald 7th Lord of the Isles and Margaret Stewart.[1] He was also known as Donald of Harlaw, succeeded his father John Macdonald as Lord of the Isles.

It will thus be seen that the lands of Glengarry were included in the Lordship of the Isles from the beginning of the fourteenth century, while the family of Macdonald, styled of Glengarry, took its rise either at the end of the same or in the beginning of the succeeding century. The early history of this family is involved in considerable obsciurity, as is indeed that of the other cadet families of the Isles, overshadowed as they all were by the great parent House. It was not until the downfall of that House that they emerged from their obscurity and began to play an independent part in the drama of clan history. All the most reliable authorities are agreed that Donald, the second son of Reginald, from whom all the Clanranald are descended, was the progenitor of the family of Glengarry. To Reginald, his father John, Lord of the Isles, granted a charter of many lands within the Lordship of the Isles, including lands in Lochaber, and the same was confirmed by another charter by Robert II. m 1371.[2]

This Donald was never Earl of Ross. While he contested a claim it was not advanced and he revoked the claim in 1412. He didn't live to see the claim provided to his wife and son. His wife outlived him and pursued the claim to Ross with James I. This was granted in 1427 to Alexander MacDonald. [citation needed]

He married Mariote, daughter and heiress of Sir Walter Leslie by 25 Jul 1403.[1] THey had issue:

  1. Alexander, Lord of the Isles[1]
  2. Angus, Bishop of the Isles, d. in 1437[1]
  3. a son, became a monk[3]
  4. Anna, m. Robert, son of Duncan MacLawmonth, dispensation 30 Oct 1397[3]
  5. Mariot, m. Celestine, eldest son and heir of Duncan Campbell of Lochawe, dispensation dated 13 Feb 1420[3]

Donald died at Ardtornish castle in 1423.[1]
