Biography

Charles was born on the 17th August 1823, at Baggot Street Dublin, to parents Richard Macdonnell and Jane Graves.

In 1842 he was gazetted to the 29th Worcestershire Regiment, later serving as a Captain and Brevet-Major. He took part in the campaigns of the Sutlej as Lieutenant and Adjutant, and was present at the battles of Ferozeshah on the 21st and 23rd December 1845; and at Sobraon on the 10th February 1846. It was here, storming the entrenched camp, he was struck by a ball over the left eye; it passed around, carrying off part of the bone, destroying the sight of the eye, and greatly injuring the whole nervous system.

In 1848 to 1849, Charles was in the Punjab Campaign as Major of Brigade at the passage of Chenal, under Lord Gough ad as D A Adj-General of Division was in the battles of Chillianwallagh and Goojerat.

In 1849, he returned on sick leave and completed his course in 1851 in T.C.D, taking the highest place.

In 1852 he passed senior department at Sandhurst, and in 1853 he took command of the Depot at Chatham

He married Ellen Cotter, daughter of John, of Ashton, near Cork, Ireland, on the 7th June 1853, passing away on the 5th August 1853, interred with military honours at Gillingham Church.[1]
