Lawrence Palliser was born on 26 January 1890[1] at 139 South Lambeth Rd, London, England, and his birth was registered in the first quarter of 1890 at Lambeth, London[2]. He was the son of John Machell and Eliza Lawrence.
In 1891 he was aged one and a visitor in the home of James Briggs (a retired market gardener aged 79) , his wife Honor (66) and their two sons - James (a market gardener aged 29) and Henry (a contractor aged 27) - at 106 Canterbury Road, Croydon, Surrey[3][4]. It is unclear why Lawrence was visiting unless Mrs Briggs was looking after him. He started school at Stockwell College on 30 April 1894 aged four[5].
His father died in 1897[6]. His mother married for the second time in 1900[7].
In 1901 he was living with his step-father Frederick Lilley (a corn dealer aged 46), his mother Eliza (49), his five siblings - Florence (a commercial book-keeper aged 21), Rosetta ( (a dress maker aged 19), John (a butcher's assistant aged 17), Walter (a school boy aged 14) and Edward (a school boy aged 7), a step-sister Rose Lilley (a typewriter aged 21) and two servants at 21 Nightingale Lane, Clapham Common, Streatham, London[8]. He was a school boy aged 11. In 1911 he was still with his mother Eliza S (59) and two brothers - Walter (a corn dealer aged 24) and Edward (a hosiers shop assistant aged 17) - and two boarders - Edwin and Emily Moase - at 2 Stockwell Park, Crescent, Stockwell, Lambeth, London[9]. He was an aeroplane mechanic aged 21.
He married Margaret Mary O'Dowd in the third quarter of 1924[10][11]. They had no children.
In 1925 he was on the electoral roll for the Lambeth Ward living at 3 Electric Avenue, Lambeth[12]. In 1939 he was living with his wife Margaret Mary at 4 Park Mansions, Lambeth, London[1]. He was a a proprietor of a motor works born on 26 January 1890. He was still at 4 Park Mansions, South Lambeth Road in 1963 and registered in the Vauxhall Ward as was his wife[13].
Lawrence died on 23 February 1984 at 50 Park Road, Kenley[14], and his death was registered in the first quarter at Croyden, Surrey[15][16]. He was aged 94 years. His probate was granted at London on 23 May 1984 for £38,109[14].
