Biography

Middlesex (historic flag)
John Machell was born in Middlesex, England.
This profile is part of the Machell Name Study.

John Machell was the son of John Machell and Frances Cotton. [1]

The pedigree chart of "Machell of Kendal", at the end of Bellasis's "The Machells of Crackenthorpe," states that Frances' mother died in the home of her father, William Cotton, in Homerton, Middlesex, giving birth to John and his twin sister, Frances, in May 1574, so John was born at that time. [2]

The 1634 Machell pedigree in the Essex Visitation shows that John Machell married Catharin, daughter of Jaspar Leeke of Wyer, in Edmonton, Essex. Their marriage was recorded in the names of "Katherina Leeke" and "John Manchell", and took place on the 24th of November, 1595, in All Saints, Edmonton. [3]

Research Notes

John's father was christened in 1546, and married by 1568; and his mother died in 1574. [4]

The 1634 Machell pedigree in the Essex Visitation shows John Machell's son, John of Chigwell, Essex, had children James, Thomas, Edmond, and Ann.

The Leeke pedigree, in the Middlesex Pedigrees, shows that Jasper Leeke's wife was Mary, the daughter and co-heiress of Thomas Colshill, of Chigwell, Essex.

John Schmeeckle I don't think there is any need to have information about a different John Machell on this profile. Please do not add back the erroneous information I originally added to this profile.

Yes, on reflection having a son born about 1563 does not fit quite right as his father would have been only 17 years old and his mother probably younger than that. I will remove the sources for the John Machell who became a freeman in 1584. I will also remove the paragraph you titled "A Different John Machell" to avoid further confusion.

Charlene, I have to wonder if this John Machell was actually a son of John Machell the 1558 Alderman, son Leonard Machell (brother of John the Alderman d. 1556) mentioned in Bellasis's pedigree at the very end of "The Machells of Crackenthorpe." The reason for this is that the baptism of John Manshell in Hackney on 21 Jan. 1579 at Hackney would seem to fit with the other baptisms at that place and time. The John Machell of this profile would seem to be too old to be the son of John and Frances Cotton -- because John was born in 1545.
