Lydia Rosetta was born on 1 Dec 1873 at Westminster, Middlesex, England[1], and her birth was registered at St George Hanover Square[2][3]. She was the daughter of John Machell and Eliza Lawrence. Her middle name was her mother's mother's first name.
In 1881 she was living with her parents, John (a butcher aged 39) and Eliza (29), two half-siblings - William J (15) and Victoria A (11), and four siblings - Alice M (9), Emma L (5), both scholars, and John (3) and Florence N (1) - at 32 Regency Street, Westminster, London[4]. She was a scholar aged 7. In 1891 she was living with her parents, John (50) and Eliza (45), together with her half-brother William J (a butcher's shopman aged 15), five siblings - Alice M (a book keeper aged 19), Florence A (11), Rosetta E (9), John M (7) and Walter G (4) - and two servants at 137 and 139 South Lambeth Road, Lambeth, London[5]. She was employed in her father's butcher shop as a shop woman.
She married John (Johann) Martin Ludwig on 30 November 1896 at St Margaret, Westminister after the banns were published in early November at his Parish of St Mary, Newington[6][7]. He worked as a butcher for her father. They had four children, three of whom were born in London,
In 1901 she was living with her husband John (a butcher aged 34 born in Germany) and daughter Freda (2) at 26 Heyford Ave, Lambeth, London[1][16]. She was aged 26.
Lydia (Machell) Ludwig migrated from England to New Zealand.
The family - John (39), Lydia (33), Freda (9), Martin (5), Hilda (3) and her niece Freda Roberts (7) - emigrated to New Zealand, leaving from London on 14 November 1907 on the Athenic and arriving on 1 January 1908 at Wellington[17]. They settled in Gisborne. Her last son was born there.
In 1911 she was living at 31 Palmerston Road, Gisborne, being listed on the Gisborne Supplementary Electoral Roll[18]. In 1919 she was at Whitaker Street, Whataupoko and John a butcher was at Ormond Street, both on the Gisborne Electoral Roll[19].
In 1922 she was listed at 108 Ormond Road, Whataupoko on the Gisborne Electoral Roll[20]. In 1925 she was joined on the roll by her children Freda, Hilda and Martin a mechanical engineer as well as her husband John a butcher, all at 108 Ormond Road[21]. By 1928 the address was 112 Ormond Road[22].
Her husband John died on 8 July 1947[23]. In 1949 she was living at 112 Ormond Street and listed as a widow on the Gisborne General Electoral Roll[24].
Lydia died on 8 February 1952[25] at 110 Ormond Street, Gisborne, New Zealand. She was buried on 11 February 1952[26] at Taruheru Cemetery, Gisborne, Block 21, Plot 159[27]. The inscription reads[28]:
