Biography

William Wallace Macintyre was born 30 Sep 1877 in Guelph, Ontario, Canada. [1] One record gave the birthplace as Lancaster, Ontario.

When Willie was a baby, they lived near the school where his father taught. One day, having bathed him, his mother went to get a towel. "Willie was nowhere to be seen when she returned. He had run off to the school to find his father. The class tittered as the naked little boy came into the schoolroom and one of the girls grabbed baby Willie and wrapped him in her pinafore, which all little girls of that day wore to school."

Willie worked as a building contractor from 1890 in Montréal, Québec. [2] [3]

When Willie "was in Montréal he sent a message to John Dunlop, who was then a boy of ten or so, to be sure to meet the boat from Montreal when it docked in South Lancaster. In those days there was a regular boat service between Montreal and Cornwall; this was the main means of transport before the railroad came. John Dunlop met the boat and a great black and white St. Bernard dog bounded off to meet him. The dog's name was "Captain" and from then on for many years at the Dunlops, Captain was a loved pet." [4]

On 6 June 1905, William and Katie O'Brien were married in Montréal. [5] Willie's wife Katie died 7 Nov 1907 in childbirth. Baby Donald was brought to Willie's mother for a short time before it was decided that Donald's mother's family would raise him. Willie and Ina Elizabeth Quinn married 15 Apr 1912 in Montreal. [6] Ina was a friend of Katie's. They had two children born in Montréal. The first world war was hard on the building business, so Willie decided to go west, perhaps to farm. They went first to the Donald and Annie Johnstone farm where Archie was born in 1918. Farming did not suit Willie, so they moved to Athabasca where Willie worked for Frank Falconer for a time. Then he got a job building bridges in outlying areas for the Alberta Government. The children grew up with their Falconer cousins. [7] Bridge building involved winter layoffs, so about 1924 Willie found work at the U.S. Gypsum Co. in Arden, Nevada through Athabasca neighbours. [8] They were in Arden for four years before Willie was in an automobile accident on 16 Feb 1928. It resulted in a fractured spine and his death on February 19th. [9] Then the family moved back to Canada bringing his body with them to be buried in South Lancaster. [10] He was buried 28 Feb 1928 beside his father in St. Andrews Presbyterian Cemetery, South Lancaster, Glengarry, Ontario, Canada. [11] [12]
