David was born in 1841.

From Roster of the 9th New York Heavy Artillery:

"MACK, DAVID S.—Age, 21 years. Enlisted, August 13, 1862, at Williamson; mustered in as sergeant, Co. B, One Hundred and Thirty-eighth Infantry, August 14, 1862 (which became the Ninth Artillery, December 19, 1862), to serve three years; discharged, October 4, 1863, for promotion to First Lieutenant in Seventh United States Colored Troops."

Mustered into the 7th USCT 12 Nov. 1863, Company D, and discharged for promotion to Captain 25 April 1864.

Mustered into Company G, 116th USCT, 25 April 1864; prisoner of war 29 Sept. 1864 at Fort Gilmer, Virginia; promoted by brevet to Major 13 March 1865; mustered out 17 Jan. 1867.
