Biography

Francis' birth date of 26 Feb 1858 is unsourced, but appears regularly online. It contradicts the 1900 census, but is consistent with other records. More work is needed to know whether the date is accurate or just a widely-shared guess.

He appears in Big Lake, Sherburne in the Minnesota 1865 census. Ages and relationships were not recorded, but there were males Charles, Frank, Francis, and Tug. The sole female was Amanda Mack. A clearer record appears in 1870, also in Big Lake. Parents Charles (42, Massachusetts) and Maude (41, Vermont) have 5 children including Henry F (12, Minnesota).^[1]

Francis married Anna M. Shields on 6 September 1879 in St. Croix, Wisconsin, United States. His parents were Charles and Amanda Mack. Her father was Timothy Shields.^[2] The next year's census, taken 1 Jun, found them in St. Joseph, St. Croix, Wisconsin with daughter Adline, age 2/12, born in Wisconsin.

There are numerous records of children born in the 1880s and 1890s.

By 1900 this was their family.^[3]

Francis is a laborer in a saw mill. Anna indicates 8 children born and 7 living, which matches the number living with them.

The "missing" child was Charles F. Mack, who lived from 1884 to 26 Aug 1886.^[4]

Francis Mack and Annie Shields had one more child, stillborn on 27 Sep 1904 at Stillwater, Minnesota.^[5][6]

In 1910 all of the children except Raymond appear to have moved on. ^[7]

My 1930 Francis was widowed, living with son George and his family.^[8]

Frank died (age 86) on 14 November 1943 in Buhl, St. Louis, Minnesota, United States. Names given include parents Charles Mack and Amanda Chase and spouse Anna Shields.^[9]

Research Note

An 1885 Minnesota census record shows a Francis Mack and others living in Stillwater, Minnesota.^[10] Birthplaces include Vermont, Massachusetts, and Minnesota. This could be the Francis of this profile, but where are Anna and their first two children? Perhaps this is a different but related household. More work is needed.
