Biography of Ann Mackay

Birth

Ann Mackay was born in Borley, Durness Parish, Sutherland, Scotland, and was baptized on Friday 15 August 1766 in Durness Parish. [1] [2] Her father was named in the baptism record, but her mother was not named, and Ann's date of birth was not included.

Life

Ancestors in Borley

Ann Mackay's parents, John Mackay and Marion Mackay, were third cousins with one set of great-great-grandparents in common, namely Captain William Mackay of Borley and his wife Elizabeth Corbet.

Barbara Mackay and Marion Mackay were sisters, were raised in Borley, and were great-grandmothers of John and Marion Mackay.

Childhood in Borley

Borley sat on a knoll overlooking Loch Borralie, surrounded by fertile grassland west of Loch Borralie, south of Loch Croispol, and about a mile south of the Durness Parish church at Balnakeil. Ann Mackay's father John Mackay was the tacksman of Borley. [3]

Ann Mackay was born less than two years after the start of the Durness Parish baptism register (i.e., November 1764), and likely had older siblings.

Ann's younger sister Mary Mackay was baptized on Saturday 26 August 1769, when Ann was 2 years old.[4]

Ann's younger brother Donald Mackay was baptized on Tuesday 28 May 1771, when Ann was 4 years old.[5] He may have been short lived, because four years later John MacKay brought another infant to be baptized with the name Donald.

Ann's younger sister Isobel Mackay was baptized on Friday 4 June 1773, when Ann was 7 years old.[6]

Ann's younger brother Donald Mackay was baptized on Monday 12 June 1775, when Ann was 9 years old.[7]

Married to James Mackay

Ann Mackay was 19 years old when she married James Mackay in Borley on Wednesday 1 February 1786. [8]

Over the next 25 years James and Ann Mackay baptised nine children in Durness Parish.

John Mackay was born in Hunleam and baptised in Durness Parish on 26 April 1788. Both parents were listed on the baptism record, but John's date of birth was not listed. [10]

Marion Mackay was born in Hunleam and baptised in Durness Parish on 20 February 1790. Both parents were listed on the baptism record, but Marion's date of birth was not listed. [11]

Jean Mackay was born in Hunleam and baptised in Durness Parish on 4 November 1792. Both parents were listed on the baptism record, but Jean's date of birth was not listed. [12]
