Biography

Donald was born around 1821 in the Village of Uig on west of the Isle of Lewis, Western Isles or Outer Hebrides Archipelago, Ross & Cromarty Parish, Scotland. He was the son of Neil (Mackay) and Christina (McRitchie).

Marriage

Donald (Mackay) marries Margaret (Henderson) on the 7 April 1848 at the Parish Church, High Street, in the Town of Wick, which straddles the River Wick and extends along both sides of Wick Bay, Burgh of Wick, Parish of Caithness, far north of Scotland[1].

Residence

We find Donald living with his wife Margaret (Henderson) and their children Neil, Eric Sutherland, Margaret and Christina (Mackay) at Riverside, in the Town of Wick, Wick Parish, Caithness, Scotland. His surname, on the Census Record, is spelt as "Mckay"[2]. In 1871, the couple are living at 3 Argyle Square, in the Village of Pulteneytown, Wick District, near the Town of Wick, in Caithness, Scotland. They reside there with children Eric Sutherland, Margaret, John, Christina and Donald (Mackay)[3].

By 1881, Donald and Margaret have moved to 64 Prince Albert Buildings, in the City of Edinburgh, Burgh of Edinburgh, District of Canongate, Midlothian, Scotland. Living with them are children Eric Sutherland, John, Christina and Donald (Mackay); granddaughter, Elizabeth L. (Mackay); married daughter Margaret (Mackay/ Dick); her husband James (Dick) and their children Neil Mackie John and Donald (Dick)[4]. In 1891, the couple now live at 8 Henry Street, in the City of Edinburgh with children John and Donald (Mackay); grandaughter Elizabeth "Lizzie" L. (Mackay); their married daughter Margaret (Mackay/Dick) and her children Neil Mackie John and Eric Sutherland Sinclair Mackay (Dick). Once again, their surname is spelt as "Mckay" and not "Mackay" on the Census Record[5].

Occupation

At the time of his daughter, Margaret's, birth, Donald is working as a Fisherman. He continues in this occupation until 1871, where he is employed as a Quarryman. However, by 1881, he is a Fireman at a Malt Works before becoming a Maltman in 1891. ref>.

Death

On the 11 December 1892, at 6.20 pm, Donald (Mackay) passes away from Chronic Bronchitis (2 Years) and Malignant Disease of the Stomach (1 Year). The place of his death is 8 Henry Street, in the City of Edinburgh, Newington District, Midlothian, Scotland and he was 70 years old at the time. His son, Donald (Mackay) is present at the death and informant to the death[6].
