Biography

He is noticed in The Scots Peerage.[1]

Aeneas was born 13 January 1806 and baptized 26 January 1806 in Nijmegen, Gelderland, Nederland. He is the son of Barthold John Christian Mackay and his wife Baroness Anna Magdalena Frederica Henriette van Renesse. [2]

He inherited the Barony of Ophemert (Peerage of Netherlands) form his father in 1854. He was a Minister of State, Vice-President of the Council of State. Balfour Paul mentions that he was awarded a G. C. (Grand Cross) of the Order of the Netherlands Lion but he does not appear on the list of recipients although his cousin does.

He died at the Hague 6 March 1876[3]

He married, 27 October 1837, Mary Catherine Anna Jacoba Fagel, daughter of Baron James Fagel, and by her, who died 22 May 1886, had issue:

  • Donald James Mackay. Who will become 11th Lord Reay. He was Baron Mackay of Ophemert in the Netherlands, born 22 December 1839, and naturalised by Act of Parliament 17 May 1877, was created Baron Reay of Durness, in the Peerage of the United Kingdom, 8 October 1881, and was a Baronet of Nova Scotia,
  • John Jacob Mackay. Born 30 October 1842, and died, unmarried, 2 June 1859.
  • Ann Agnes Mackay. Born 1838, and died 2 March 1839.
