Biography

Florence Jean 'Flo' MacKenzie was born on 25th November 1911 at China. She was one of seven children of Canadian-born missionaries, Hugh MacKenzie and Agnes Hall.^[1]

Flo was a nurse

She trained as a nurse in Toronto, Canada.^[1]

Flo and Eric were missionaries in China

Flo married Olympic Gold Medallist and missionary-teacher, Reverend Eric Liddell, on 27th March 1934 at Tientsin (Tianjin), China. Together they served as missionaries with the London Missionary Society in Tientsin. They had three daughters:^[1]

1. Patricia (Trisha) Liddell (1935-) married surname Russell
2. Heather Liddell (1937-) married surname Ingham
3. Nancy Maureen (Maureen) Liddell (1941-) married surname Moore

With the military situation in China becoming most precarious by 1941 due to the invasion by Japan, Eric sent Flo and their then two girls to Canada for their safety. Maureen was born after they reached Canada. Eric died of a brain tumour whilst in Japanese captivity in China in May 1945.^[1]

In 1951, Flo married a second time, to Murray Hall, a widowed farmer. Murray died in 1969. They had a further daughter:^[1]

Flo passed away, aged 72 years, on 14th June 1984 at Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.^[2][1]

The three girls produced a documentary in 2012 of their 2008 'return' to China: Our Magic Circle: The Daughters of Eric Liddell Return to China.^[3]
