Biography

Jane Herd Mackie was born on the 30th of November 1873 in Crail, Fife. She was the fourth child and second daughter of William Mackie and Isabella Aitcheson. ^[1]

Following traditional naming patterns, ^[2] she was named after her paternal grandmother Jean Herd who was also known as "Jane" Herd. The forename of Jane could be recorded as Jean, Jessie or Janet. ^[3]

Just short of her 2nd birthday, Jane Herd Mackie sadly passed away on the 20th of November 1875. The cause was from Scarlatina - a condition she had suffered for 7 days.^[4]

Two days after her death, on the 22nd of November, Jane was laid to rest in the Crail Churchyard cemetery in an unmarked grave - 3 yrds half foot S from S edge of David Millar headstone, on her sbc right side. ^[5]

A death notice was published in the East of Fife Record newspaper, on the 26th of November 1875. Jeanie was probably a pet name that her parents called her.^[6]
