Robert Carnegie Black Mackie was born on the 18th of July 1852 in Johnshaven. He was the son of James Mackie and Mary Ritchie. At the age of 22 he was working as a salmon fisher and he married Elizabeth McLaren McArthur aged 19 (a hemp spinner) on the 23rd of October 1874 at the Established Church of Scotland, Johnshaven. They were married by Rev. Alexander Smart Myers. Robert died on the 13th of March 1945 at Herd Crescent, Johnshaven. Robert and Elizabeth had eight children - three sons and five daughters.
