Biography

Margaret Maclaine was 82 when she died in 1810, so born in 1728.[1]

Margaret was the only sister of Murdoch Maclaine (died 1804), chieftain of Lochbuy in Mull.[1]

Margaret married Lachlan Macquarie, either the cousin of the sixteenth and last chieftain of the clan Macquarie,[1] or the sixteenth chieftain of clan Macquarrie.[2]

Lachlan Macquarie shared with two other tenants the lease of the farm Oskamull, in Mull, from the Duke of Argyll. His share of the farm was shared with his son-in-law, Farquhar Maclaine.[1]

Margaret and Lachlan had children:

  1. Donald, of 'infirm imbecile state of mind', died in 1801 at 50;[1]
  2. Hector, lieutenant in the New York Volunteer Regiment, died while prisoner of the American rebels in 1778;[1]
  3. Lachlan Macquarie, born 1762, governor of the colony of New South Wales;[1]
  4. Charles, who died on 27 March 1835;[1]
  5. a daughter married to Farquhar Maclaine;[1]

Two letters from her to her son Lachlan exist, and in 1803 when Lachlan wrote to her at her request, he asked his uncle, his normal correspondent, 'to cause some proper Person to read to her'.[1]

Margaret's son, Lachlan, paid a mariner a pound to buy a headstone for his father's grave in August 1785.[1]

When widowed, Margaret's younger sons, came under the affectionate care of Murdoch Maclaine, while she farmed her pendicle of Oskamull, with her eldest son Donald and Farquhar Maclaine, until her death in 1810 at 82.[1]
