Early History

The last son of Charles Maclay "The Settler", Samuel Maclay was educated at the classical school of the Rev. Dr. Alison. In the late 1760's, he assisted his brother William in the surveying of land in Buffalo Valley, including the "Officer's Tract", awarded to officers serving under the Colonial government. He purchased a large section of this land, and settled on it.[1]

On the outbreak of the Revolution, he was elected Lieutenant Colonel of the Northumberland County Associators, the militia of the state, and saw active service. [1]

On November 10, 1773, he married Elizabeth Plunket.[1]

Career in Government

In 1792, he was appointed one of the Associate Judges of Northumberland County, a post which he held until 1795, we he resiged to accept the office of Congressman. He served in the House of Representatives for the session 1795-1796. [1]

In 1797, he was elected to the Senate of Pennsylvania, where he served until 1803. On December 2, 1801, he was chosen Speaker for the State Senate, and was re-elected to that position in December, 1802. Seven days afterward, he was elected United States Senator from Pennsylvania, and (being the Speaker of the State Senate), signed his own certificate. [1]
