Biography

David Madden was born in 1763 in Holliston, Massachusetts to Michael and Mary Madden.

His military record: "David Madden, Milford, private, Capt. Benj. Read's Company, Col. John Rand's Reg't, enlisted July 14, 1780, served three months, 7 days, incl. ten days, 200 miles travel home. Company stationed at West Point, raised in Worcester County to reinforce Continental army for three months, also served in Capt. Reuben Davis' Company, Col. Luke Drury's Reg't. Detached July 17, 1781, marched to join regiment, July 25, 1781, arrived at West Point, Aug. 1, 1781, was discharged Nov. 1, 1781, service 3 months, 22 days, including 9 days, 180 miles travel home. Residence Milford."

His name appears in the Pension List of 1840, aged 77 years, as residing in the town of Mina, New York with Ichabod Thayer.

In 1787, he married Mrs. Anna/Anne Battle Abbe in Hopkinton, Massachusetts. "ABBE, Anna and David Madden, int. Feb. 14, 1787. [Mrs. Anna and David Maning, m. Apr. 5]." The couple had children: Ithiel, Lucretia, Lucinda, Amos, and David Madden.

David Madden married Mrs. Mary Sumner Wheelock (widow of Luther Wheelock) in Hopkinton, Massachusetts in 1818.

David Madden died at 80 years. His grave is located in a cemetery near Mina Corners, Chautauqua County, N. Y.

Children of David Madden:

  • i. Itheil Madden b. 24 Nov 1787 Hopkinton, Middlesex. In 1826 he resided unmarried in Cuba of Milford Township. RN: This person was male, not a female, not an ‘Ethel’.
  • ii. Lucretia Madden b.12 Oct 1789 Hopkinton, m. Robert Corbett on 30 Nov 1809 in Milford, MA.
  • iii. Amos Madden b. 10 Dec 1791 in Hopkinton, resided in Milford in 1816, 1818, 1822. Perhaps his son Amos married Emma M. Phillips (b.1849-1908, Vernon Grove Cemetery).
  • iv. David Madden Jr. of Aurelius NY, now residing in Milford, married Susan Thayer 1 Feb 1822.
