Rheita Madden was born in the Colony of Victoria (1851-1900)

SOCIAL GOSSIP
The wedding of Miss Rheita Madden, eldest daughter of Cr and Mrs W. A. Madden, of Sebastopol, and Mr Henry Charles Schmidt, only son of the late Mr Chas. Schmidt, of Howitt street, Ballarat North, was quietly solemnised on October 16 at Geelong, by the Rev. Stanley Hollow, M.A. Mrs Schmidt has long been well and favorably known on the concert platform and vaudeville stage, having undertaken several tours with professional companies, and she has been a very ready performer for charity. Mr Schmidt, too, is popular on the platform. [4]

Surname. It appears, no doubt due to the prevailing sentiment in war time, that the family dropped using Schmidt as their public surname. This wasn't done officially though, for when their only child married, in 1944, she did so as a Schmidt, also known as Madden. The public notice, however, when announcing the Madden-Souer engagement, referred to Julia as the "only child of Mrs. Rheita Madden, J.P.. and the late Henry Charles Madden." [5][6]

Widowed. Henry (Harry) died suddenly 21st December 1932 at Portland. Again the public announcement said one surname and his official death registration another.

Death. Rheita Madden died 10th January 1973, aged 89. Her death was registered in Cheltenham, Victoria, Australia, giving Ballarat as her birthplace. [8]

Burial. On 12th January 1973, she was buried in the St Kilda Cemetery (Church of England, Compartment B, Grave 0715A) where, in 1985, she was joined by her her sister Harriette's daughter, Kathleen Anne Quirk. [9][10]
