Research Notes

Here is where the Madder and Mather sir names get interwoven. Most trees have Edward Mather son of Thomas Mather born March 26 1727 in Torver, Kirkby Ireleth. Which is entirely possible, and there seems to be coincidences that make this probable, but I am still not sure. There are More Mather surnames in the area then Madder.

After researching Edward MADDER and Edward MATHER, it is very confusing. The only Edward that fits into this location and time frame is Edward MATHER son of Thomas Mather Baptized March 26 1727 at St Luke in Torver. As Elizabeth Fisher is named as the wife to Edward MADDER in most trees including mine as through research this seems to be the only possible match for the area and time frame. Area as in Lancashire. On their marriage it says Elizabeth Fisher and Edward MATHER. On the Edward burial we are all using April 17 1803, Dalton in Furness abode Dalton his name is spelled MADDER. When you research the children in LOLP there are 4 children with the last name spelled MADDER. Ellin 1752 abode Gleaston, Eliz 1755 abode Dalton, Thomas 1758 abode Dalton, and then there are 4 children spelled MATHER Jane 1760 abode Dalton, Ann 1763 abode Dalton, Mary 1765 abode Dalton, and Margaret 1769 abode Dalton. When you research the children in Family Search, they all report both MATHER and MADDER. Elizabeths death in 1801 it is spelled MADDER wife of Edward MADDER. Odd that it went from MADDER to MATHER and not the other way around. I could find no other marriage for an Edward Mather or Edward Madder in the 1758-1760 time range (added a couple years on either end of that date range) when the last name spelling of the kids changed. There are 3 Edward Mather that married in 10 year time range outside Lancashire, Derbyshire, Staffordshire, Shropshire,

I used a ten year range, using Find my Past, LOLP, Family Search, Ancestry, Google

There is a Thomas Madder married to a Jennet Woodburn in Aldingham in 1716. Abode Gleaston. This Thomas Madder had a daughter Jennet in 1716 in Aldingham, The record shows father "Thomas Madder now of Kirkby Ireleth," which I believe is my connection and which is where this line I am researching ends up in the area including Dalton, and possibly Broughton. Ellin Madder daughter of Edward Madder was born in Aldingham, abode Gleaston. In the image it has Ellin daughter of Robert Madder, then Robert is crossed out and Edward is written above it. In Ancestry there is a tree that has a Robert Madder who died 1743, a miller of Gleaston and then ended in Millom Cumberland. So this could be a clue to Edward MADDER. I just have a hard time with the one name change to Mather in only the one instance. Some one please please prove me wrong, it would make it so much easier.

Some trees have Thomas Mather/Madder married to Jennet Woodburne as his birthdate 1701, but they were married in 1716, 1701 which I don't think is correct, Thomas would have only been age 15 in 1716. Even a delayed baptism of 6 or more years seems improbable. Trees have also say Thomas Mather/Madder death place and burial is St Lawrence, Chorley in 1772 or 1775. And death of Jennet back in Gleaston. There is a Thomas Mather buried at St Lawrence, the one that fits in this timeline was married to Alice Ambrose in 1723, and this Thomas would make sense with the 1701 birth date.

Then they have Edward MATHER married to Elizabeth Fisher in 1751 in Dalton as parents of Eleanor Todd nee Madder. Lancashire on line.

There is a Thomas Madder burial in Broughton in Furness in 1730 and a Jane Madder widow of Thomas Madder buried 1741 in Broughton in Furness. Could this Jane be a shortened version of Jennet??

One Edward Madder shows up in search results for Lancashire, born 1738, but buried 1739. So there lies that the probability that there could have been a name transcription error. Need to research to see the if there is connection to the Robert Madder in Aldingham. I still wondering if there are 2 separate families here that have gotten interwoven. I tried checking church records for 1727 Edward Mather born Torver Kirkby Ireleth, but that page is missing.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Edward by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Edward:
