Mary, daughter of Thomas Madison and Joanna, was born on 15 May 1738 at Caroline County, VA.[1] Her birth date is known from Reminiscences of Eastern Oregon, which has a lot of information on her family, as well as that of her brother-in-law Thomas Buckner.[2] Her father Thomas Madison was a great uncle of President James Madison.
She probably died after 1812. A marriage contract between John Thornton and Jane Laughlin, widow, in Caroline Co., VA, dated 12 October 1812 says that Jane [Buckner] Laughlin will be entitled to a part of the slaves held in dower "at the death of her mother, Mary [Madison] Buckner".[3]
She married Capt. William BUCKNER II, son of John BUCKNER III and Elizabeth (—?—), in 1753 at Caroline County, VA.[4]
Mary's whereabouts in 1810 are uncertain. Her children Francis, Richard, Matilda, and Horace were dead. There was no female over 45 in the households of her sons William and John in Green Co, KY or Thomas in Caroline Co, VA, nor in VA with her sons-in-law Thomas Slaughter, James Upshaw, William Johnston, or John Thornton. She might have been the older woman living with her step-son Richard's widow, Judith, or with her daughter Elizabeth's 2nd husband, William Sthreshley, both in Caroline county.
