Biography

Mary, daughter of Thomas Madison and Joanna, was born on 15 May 1738 at Caroline County, VA.[1] Her birth date is known from Reminiscences of Eastern Oregon, which has a lot of information on her family, as well as that of her brother-in-law Thomas Buckner.[2] Her father Thomas Madison was a great uncle of President James Madison.

She probably died after 1812. A marriage contract between John Thornton and Jane Laughlin, widow, in Caroline Co., VA, dated 12 October 1812 says that Jane [Buckner] Laughlin will be entitled to a part of the slaves held in dower "at the death of her mother, Mary [Madison] Buckner".[3]

She married Capt. William BUCKNER II, son of John BUCKNER III and Elizabeth (—?—), in 1753 at Caroline County, VA.[4]

Mary's whereabouts in 1810 are uncertain. Her children Francis, Richard, Matilda, and Horace were dead. There was no female over 45 in the households of her sons William and John in Green Co, KY or Thomas in Caroline Co, VA, nor in VA with her sons-in-law Thomas Slaughter, James Upshaw, William Johnston, or John Thornton. She might have been the older woman living with her step-son Richard's widow, Judith, or with her daughter Elizabeth's 2nd husband, William Sthreshley, both in Caroline county.

Madison-1241 and Madison-635 do not represent the same person because: Mary Madison-635 married William Buckner about 1756 and was called Mary Buckner on 12 Oct 1812, leaving no time for a marriage to Hickenson. The birth and death dates of Madison-1241 have no source and the profile has a comment that her surname is uncertain. Please do not merge.

Madison-1241 and Madison-635 appear to represent the same person because: These profiles appear to represent the same person: same birth name, same dates and places of birth, same death year. Spouses are different but many trees show marriages to both men.

Madison-635 and Madison-823 appear to represent the same person because: they have the same dob. Mary and her siblings are all children of Thomas and Johanna Madison according to Margaret Amundson, "Re: Pres. Madison & issue of descendants," 26 Nov 2001, Genealogy.com, discussion list, [1].
