Cobert D. "Coby" Madsen, age 81, of Edwards, Missouri, passed away Sunday afternoon, January 6, 2008, at the Phelps County Regional Hospital in Rolla, Missouri. He was born Atwood, Kansas, on December 2, 1926, the son of Irving E. and Villa I. Miller Madsen.
In the early 1930's he moved with his family to Lincoln, Nebraska. At the age of seventeen he enlisted in the United States Navy serving overseas in the Pacific Theater as a veteran of World War II. On March 9, 1950, he transferred from the Navy to the United States Army serving in Japan as a veteran of the Korean War. He finally received his Honorable Discharge on April 7, 1953.
Back on July 27, 1946, he was united in marriage to Mary Lou Ramsey. Following his discharge they made their home in Lincoln, Nebraska. There he worked for the Elgin Watch Company. In 1956 they moved to Phoenix, Arizona. There he worked as a technical engineer , for Air Research, until 1975. In 1975 they moved to their home near Edwards, Missouri.
For the next two years he worked as a custodian for the Climax Springs School District. He then began working as a sheet metal worker with American Heating and then Gary's Heating & Cooling of Greenview, Missouri, from 1981 thru 1997.
His wife, Mary Lou, preceded him in death in 1995. He was also preceded in death by one sister, Iris Malone, and two brothers, Gordon Madsen and John Madsen. Coby is survived by six children; Linda Russell, of Nogales, Arizona, Michael Madsen, of Grandview, Missouri, Mark Madsen, and his wife, Anna Lynne, of Independence, Missouri, Laura Wright, and her husband, William, of Camdenton, Missouri, Leisa Parker, and her husband, Bryan, of Rolla, Missouri, and Mathew Madsen, and his wife, Angela, of Climax Springs, Missouri. Other survivors include seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren with a forth coming soon. He leaves two brothers, Rodney Madsen, of Independence, Missouri, and Chris Madsen, of Lincoln, Nebraska, numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
As a young man growing up he was a Boy Scout, working himself thru the ranks for several years. When his sons came of age he saw to it that they joined the Boy Scouts in Troop 13 in Phoenix, Arizona, and he was there with them as a Troop Leader and later as scout commissioner. He was "tapped-out" in the same ceremony as his son, Mark, becoming a member of the Order of the Arrow, achieving the honorary rank of Vigil. As a father and a former Boy Scout there were many proud moments in this work.
Coby Madsen will be cremated to be followed by a Memorial Service at 2:00 P.M. Saturday afternoon,January 12, 2008,at the Fredonia Baptist Church near Warsaw, with Rev. Rick Dewitt officiating. Full Military Honors will be performed following the services at the church.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Fredonia Baptist Church or the Ellis-Fishel Cancer Hospital in care of the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Reser Funeral Home, Warsaw.
