Maurice Maeterlinck was the son of Polydore Maeterlinck, notary, born ca 1835, and Mathilde van den Bossche, born about 1835. He was born on 29 August 1862 in his parents' house in Pyperstraat, Ghent, Belgium. His full name at birth registration was: Mauritius Polidorus Maria Bernardus Maeterlinck.

He married Renée Dahon, an actress 31 years his junior, on 25 February 1919 in Châteauneuf-Contes (now Châteauneuf-Villevieille)[1].
