Hugh Stewart Magill was born on 10 June 1830 in Dromore, County Down, Northern Ireland. He was the son of James Magill and his wife Elizabeth Stuart.

He passed away on 23 September 1920 in Auburn, Sangamon County, Illinois, United States and was buried on 27 September 1920 in the Auburn Cemetery, Auburn, Sangamon County, Illinois, United States.
