Tommy Magill was born qt 17 Dundee Street, Belfast, on 5 December 1901, son of Thomas Magill and Jane, née English. Jane's mother Agnes English was present at the birth.[1] His father's occupation is given as driller, but at that time he was with the Imperial Yeomanry in South Africa, serving in the Second Boer War.

In the 1911 census he is 9 and living at 60 Kyle Street with his parents and siblings Joseph (3), John (2) and James (2 months).[2]
In 1919 he enlisted with the Royal Navy. He was 5 feet 3 1/2 inches tall, with a 35 inch chest, brown hair, hazel eyes and a fresh complexion. He served for twelve years, rising from stoker second class to leading stoker, before re-enlisting and rising through stoker petty officer to chief stoker.[3]

Tommy married Etta Hanna at St Nicholas' Parish Church, Belfast, on 14 August 1937. His address was 276 Albertbridge Road, Belfast. Etta's address was 21 Meadowbank Street, Belfast.[4] They had two children.
When the Second World War broke out he was chief stoker on HMS Ajax, and took part in the Battle of the River Plate in 1939. In 1941 he was chief stoker on the Calliope. In 1942 He was chief stoker on the HMS Grove, and died on 12 June when it was sunk by a U-Boat on its way to Alexandria, Egypt. He is commemorated at Chatham Naval Memorial, Kent.[3][5][6]
