The Early History and Pioneers of Manvers Township

The Magill settlement, in the western part of the township, along what is known as the Broad Road, has numerous residents of the name. Robert Magill Sr. is the acknowledged chief. For a number of years, long after the early settlement, constables did not much care about venturing into the locality of the Broad Road without the friendly protection of the Magills. Many were the "tricks upon travellers," and tales of the capturing of constables are still related of those "good old days."

Robert Henry was born in 1834 in Manvers to parents John and Isabella (Bella) Magill. Both were Irish. John was a farmer and a member of the Methodist New Connexion.

Robert married Mary Ann Gray in 1860 and they had children:

Samuel Magill

Christopher Magill

Fredrick Magill

Victoria Magill

Wilbert Magill

When Robert Henry died in 1920 of senility and gangrene he was living at Conc. 3, lot 7 Manvers . Interestingly, it was his nephew, and not one of his sons that was the informant. He is buried at the Yelverton Cemetery in Yelverton.

Their religious affiliation was with the Methodist New Connexion but he was buried at the Yelverton United Church Cemetery in Yelverton, Manvers Twp.

There are many, many Magills in Manvers Twp. with repeating first names.
